This agri tips page is a compilation of tips and techniques proven to be very effective relative to successful natural and/or organic farming practices.  Our aim is not only to help poor farmers in improving  their level of income by eliminating the use of costly and deadly  chemical inputs, but also to encourage recycling and thereby protecting the environment - Costales Nature Farms
How to Prepare Pig Pen Beddings

Materials Needed:
  • Sawdust/Coirdust/Rice Hull (10 sacks)
  • Carbonized Rice Hull or CRH (1 sack)
  • Soil (1 sack)
  • Salt (seasalt/rocksalt) (.5 kg)
  • EM Activated Solution (EMAS) (200 ml)
  • Molasses  (200 ml)
  • Water (non-chlorinated) (20 liter)
Procedure:
Make a small batches and layer the components after they are mixed. Make a mixture of 10 sacks sawdust/coir dust, 1 sack soil etc. then spread out and mix next batch till you have 1 meter deep.  Spray the EMAS 1:100 dilution rate, add water to 30% moisture. Continue the process until  the 1 meter- deep hole for bedding is filled.

Organic Feed Formulation (For Pigs)

Materials Needed:
  • Rice Bran (D1) (50 kg)
  • Soya meal (10 kg)or Duckweed(20 kg) or Azolla (20 kg) or Fish Amino Acid  (20 liter) (whichever is available)
  • Copra meal (7 kg)
  • Greens /forage crops (15 kg)
  • EM-1  (50 ml)
  • Molasses (50 ml)
  • Water (10 liters)
Note : Moisture content should be 30%
Procedure:
Mix all the materials just like cement on concrete floor; the bulk dry first, and then add EM-1 Concentrate, molasses and water.  Ferment for 2 weeks in a sealed drum/container.

Organic Feed Formulation (For Chicken, Duck and other Poultry)

Materials Needed:
  • Pig feed mix(above)=2kg
  • Cracked corn=2kg
  • Rice bran (D1)=2kg
  • Copra meal=2kg
  • Soya meal or duckweed=2kg
  • Livestock lime=1 tbsp Salt=1 tbsp
  • 1 kg crushed egg/sea shell (for layers only)
Procedure:
Mix all the materials in a container and feed directly to chickens. No fermentation is required.  For chickens, serve it dry. For ducks, mix with 3 liters of water before serving


How to Prepare Potting mix or seedling medium?

Materials Needed:

By volume, not be weight
  • Carbonized Rice Hull (CRH)= 2 sack
  • Vermicast or Vermicompost= 1 sack
  •  

    Procedure:

    Mix all the materials thoroughly 

    How to Prepare EMAS or Effective Microorganisms Activated Solution?

    Materials Needed:

     1 liter capacity plastic container
    50 ml EM-1 Concentrate
    50 ml Molasses or 50 g brown sugar
    1 liter of non-chlorinated water
     
    Procedure:

    1. Dissolve 50 ml molasses/50g brown sugar to 1 liter non-chlorinated water
    2.  Add 50 ml EM-1 and mix well
    3.  Cover the container tightly.  Keep it at room temperature away from direct sunlight
    4.  On the 3rd day, loosen the cap to release the gas inside the bottle and tighten again. Repeat this process everyday until fermentation is completed.
    5.  Start using EMAS at 8th day.  It should have sweet-sour smell. Use EMAS within 1 month.

    How to Prepare EMRW or Effective Microorganisms Rice Water?

    Materials Needed:

     1 liter capacity plastic container
    30 ml EM-1 Concentrate
    30 ml Molasses or 30 g brown sugar
    1 liter of non-chlorinated water rice rinse water (hugas bigas)

    Procedure:

    1. Dissolve 50 ml molasses/50g brown sugar to 1 liter rice rinse (hugas bigas) water. First and/or  second wash can be used.
    2.  Add 30 ml EM-1 and mix well
    3.  Cover the container tightly.  Keep it at room temperature away from direct sunlight
    4.  On the 3rd day, loosen the cap to release the gas inside the bottle and tighten again. Repeat this process everyday until fermentation is completed.
    5.  Start using EMRW at 8th day.  It should have sweet-sour smell. Use EMRW within 1 month.

    **EMRW and EMAS have similar potency and same use. However, EMRW is more economical.

    Various Applications of Effective Microorganisms

    For crop production

    Seed Germination

    Dilute 1 ml of EMAS/EMRW to 1000 ml of water. 
    Soak seeds for 15 min to 1 hour before sowing
    (small seeds=15min, big seeds 30min).

    **Improves germination rate and prevents seed-borne diseases
    Land Preparation

    Dilute 1 liter of EMAS/EMRW into 200 liters of water. 
    Spray/drench freely, approximately 4 liters of diluted solution per square meter for soil conditioning. 

    Purpose

    Improves soil porosity, inoculates beneficial organisms into the soil, attracts earthworms and eliminates pathogenic micro organisms

    For crop maintenance

    Dilute 10 ml EMAS/EMRW per liter of water;
    Drench direct to the soil once a week. 
    The microorganisms will feed and decompose organic matter
    and convert it into plant food. 

    Purpose:

    Improves soil porosity, inoculates beneficial organisms
    into the soil, attracts earthworms and eliminates
    pathogenic micro organisms.

    For crop maintenance

    Dilute 10 ml EMAS/EMRW per liter of water;
    Drench direct to the soil once a week. 
    The microorganisms will feed and decompose organic matter
    and convert it into plant food. 
    Purpose:

    Improves soil porosity, inoculates beneficial organisms
    into the soil, attracts earthworms and eliminates
    pathogenic micro organisms.
    Foliar Spray

    Dilute 10 ml of EMAS/EMRW per liter of water and spray it onto the leaves and stems of plants 2 times a week.

    **Photosynthetic bacteria  in EM helps to maximize the utilization of solar energy and enhance photosynthetic capability of leaves, thus promotes better foliage and food production capability of the plant.

    Purpose:

    Use to enhance plant growth by maximizing photosynthetic activity and prevents plant diseases

    How to Prepare “Anaerobic Bokashi” Organic Fertilizer

    Materials:

    Rice bran (D3) = 3 sacks (approx 100 kg)
    Carbonized Rice Hull (CRH)= 3 sacks (approx 100 kg)
    Copra meal = 1 sack (50 kg)
    EM Activated Solution(EMAS) & Molasses=200 ml each
    Water=40 liters

    Procedure:

    Mix all the materials just like cement on concrete floor; the bulk dry first, and then add EMAS, molasses and water.  Ferment for 2-3 weeks in a sealed drum/container

    Purpose:

    A complete fertilizer that can be used for basal and side dress application

    How to Prepare “Aerobic Bokashi” Organic Fertilizer

    Materials:

    Rice bran (D3) = 3 sacks (approx 100 kg)
    Carbonized Rice Hull (CRH)= 3 sacks (approx 100 kg)
    Decomposed manure of chicken/vermicast/ruminants = 1 sack (50 kg)
    EM Activated Solution(EMAS) & Molasses=200 ml each
    Water=40 liters

    Procedure:

    Mix all the materials just like cement on concrete floor; the bulk dry first, and then add EMAS, molasses and water.  Cover it with sacks or used plastics/tarps. Ferment for 1 week in a shade. Avoid direct sunlight and rain.  Turn the pile everyday to avoid excessive heat until fermentation is completed.

    Purpose:
    A complete fertilizer that can be used for basal and side dress application


    How to Prepare “EM FAA” or EM Fish Amino Acid

    Materials:

    Fish scraps/trimmings=3 -  5 kg
    Molasses= 3 liters
    200ml  EM Activated Solution or EMAS(Eliminates foul odor, inoculation of beneficial micro organisms)

    Procedure:

    Ferment anaerobic ally in a sealed container for 30 days.
    Dilution rate with water after fermentation is 1:100

    Purpose:

    For foliar spray or drench application during vegetative stage of plants when nitrogen needs are higher

    How to Prepare Foliar Calcium

    Materials:

    Burnt/broiled egg shells of chicken, ducks, ostrich, etc.=1 kg.
    Natural Vinegar=2.5 liters

    Procedure:

    Ferment anaerobic ally in a sealed container for 20 days.
    Dilution rate with water after fermentation 1:100

    Purpose:

    For foliar spray during flowering stage of plants when calcium needs are higher.
    Prevents BER or blossom-end-rot  in tomatoes, squash, pepper and other fruiting vegetables

    How to Prepare Calcium Phosphate (calphos)

    Materials

    Burnt/broiled bones of cow, goat, carabao, fish, etc.=1 kl
    Natural Vinegar=2.5 liters

    Procedure

    Ferment anaerobic ally in a sealed container for 30 days. Dilution rate  with water after fermentation 1:100

    Purpose

    For foliar spray during fruiting stage of plants when calcium phosphate needs are higher


    How to Prepare Compost Tea

    Materials:

    Compost tea brewer
    Vermicast/vermicompost=4 kg
    Molasses= 1 liter
    EM activated solution  or EMAS = 1 liter
    Water= 200 liters (1 drum)
    200-liter capacity blue drum

    Procedure:

    Steep finished worm castings, compost in a water drum with an aquarium type aerator to grow beneficial microorganism. Brew 12 to 36 hours. Dilution rate with water after brewing is 1:2

    Purpose:

    For foliar spray or drench application. Can be applied  at any growth stages of the plant. Inoculation of beneficial micro organisms into the soil/plant.

    How to Prepare Bokashi Tea

    Procedure:

    Steep BOKASHI  in a water drum with an aquarium type aerator to grow beneficial micro organism.  Brew 12 to 36 hours. Dilution rate after brewing is 1:2


    Materials:

    Compost tea brewer
    BOKASHI=4 kg
    Molasses= 1 liter
    EM activated solution  or EMAS = 1 liter
    Water= 200 liters (1 drum)
    200-liter capacity blue drum

    Purpose:

    For foliar spray or drench application. Can be done at any growth stages of the plant. Inoculation of beneficial micro organisms into the soil/plant.
